So, ASU hired their new football coach.
Truth be told, given the circumstances and resources available, I think Dennis Erickson was the best choice Lisa Love could make. And instead of griping about how we could have had Mike Price or Mike Riley or Norm Chow or Mike Martz or Steve Kragthorpe or even Larry Coker...I'm going to throw my full support to Coach Erickson in hopes that ASU is his last stop and final big hurrah in his stellar coaching career.
We're not Idaho, Oregon St., Washington St. or Miami...this is for sure. But ASU has had so much potential for years to have a really great football program, and frankly, nobody can predict success every time. We have to sit back and let it play out.
Was I hoping for another coach? Maybe. But let me tell you how unrealistic my hopes were: One coach is preparing Ohio State for a national title. One coach is prepping USC for the Rose Bowl. One coach is a coordinator for the Tennessee Titans (I'm talking about Mac, not Chow), and the other was just fired from the University of Miami. Put the pieces together and you get the picture.
After the Hawai'i Bowl, it's Erickson's team, and I wish Dirk Koetter all the success in the world wherever he lands.

i'm not as optimistic as you are i guess. if erickson has any measure of success at asu he'll bolt within a few years. why would he change now? he's always been that way. i honestly don't know how this guy keeps landing such great jobs. he was really successful at miami and did good things at oregon state but left before his work there really had a chance to take off, and other than those two stops his career's been a series of middling ncaa stops and nfl failures.
i don't know who else they would have hired, though, if their goal was to have someone in place by early december (which was their stated goal). though i think it would have been better to wait until january even to really see about lane kiffin or even sark from usc rather than hiring erickson now.
i'm disappointed. if erickson succeeds, he's going to the nfl (probably the cardinals, because he always makes poor decisions about where to go in the nfl), and if he doesn't succeed, well, we might as well have stuck with koetter.
I would've been happy sticking with Koetter for another season. But I guess I'm not in accordance with Lane Kiffin or Steve Sarkisian. They're paving their own path to greatness, that's for sure, but I don't think this is their boat.
yeah. i don't know much about kiffin or sark as a coach. but i don't think asu would be worse off for having either of them. maybe not better off either. i don't know that they'd have gotten either of those guys either. but i think there are a lot of options out there that they might've explored. but with erickson you know what you're getting: a few years max before he bolts, and i don't think that's what asu needs right now. i wouldn't have cared if they'd kept koetter around though, either. i think he had some pretty serious gaffes this last year and he took a lot of crap, but seriously, he had a pretty good record here and, for all the injuries this season, they had a decent year. the quarterback flub at the beginning of the season did him in though.
having said all that i'd love to eat a huge plate of crow in a couple of years.
