The door swings both ways...doesn't it?

Thanks to those of you who've commented on my previous post. All very interesting things to read.

I've been reading a lot about how it's just the progressives/liberals/Dems who are opposed to Cheney's speech, and that if a Barack Obama, Al Gore, or Helen Thomas (thanks, Jay) were to come to campus they'd be just fine. Other than that being kind of obvious, wouldn't the conservatives/Republicans then be peeved?

yes. i believe the answer to your question is 'yes.' like remember when UVSC invited Michael Moore to speak, and the general conservative utah valley populace worked itself into a froth?

i think a lot of people are misinterpreting the demonstrations and the outspokenness of those who are opposed to Cheney. they're not really protesting that he's speaking at commencement (well some are, but that's not the general idea, or at least it shouldn't be), they're protesting the administration he plays a prominent role in, its policies, etc. big difference.

i think, when a politician of influence comes to talk to us, we as a people have a responsibility to make that person of influence hear and understand our voices and opinions either way. isn't this a representative democracy after all?

and for what it's worth, from what i've read it's not just the Ds at BYU who are opposed to Dick Cheney.

like i said (or maybe tried to say, i had a post last night that got lost): the first presidency, as BYU's governing board, approved the idea to invite mr. cheney, and they even issued a statement that there was no political endorsement intended. i believe them. i just don't trust the rest of the country, the press, etc. to believe that statement, given that BYU is what it is and given the reputation of Mormon people as staunch Republicans. even Mormons might view it as a tacit endorsement. and i think that that's what's unfortunate.

i don't know what i'm doing. i try to avoid politics at all costs when i'm at home. i get so much of this garbage at work.

I like it that errol tries to avoid politics at home, because I don't care for them. Oh, and I agree with paragraph 5 completely.
